Are You a Relay Veteran?

I'm a relay virgin, and with the Ragnar Great River Relay coming up in about 3 weeks I'd love any advice that those of you with experience may have for me and the team.

Please comment on this post if you know anything about surviving a 200+ mile 12 person relay.

Bring your maps and cell phones on the run! Two of our team members got lost at GRR and that really sucked. But otherwise, it is a blast! Even if I personally get quite cranky by the end because of being sleep deprived!

I almost did it this year. Maybe next year!! I hope you have a great time!! (from what I hear, it's hard NOT to have a blast!)

How much of the 200 miles do you run? I've never done one, but I would think stretching in between your shifts would be important.

Make sure you give your runners time to stretch after their runs. You can stiffen up and get hurt if you don't.

If you have places to shower along the way...do it, it makes you feel better.

Make your food finger food and simple. You don't have a lot of time. Make peanut butter and honey sandwiches ahead of time. I like cut up fruit, grapes, candy like gummy bears, pasta salad in cups, nuts, pretzels, potato chips. Loads of water, coke is a great after run energizer.

Give your runners water every 2 miles. Don’t get too far ahead of them...I got lost this year.

Get out of the van and cheer for your runners. Sometimes it gets hard.

Night runs are the most fun. Enjoy them. Don’t forget a sweat shirt.

Take turns getting out and running with a runner who is having trouble. It helps.

Avoid heat stroke. Keep your runner cool.
