Today was the big day! We got up at 5 am and we were out the door by 5:30 so we could drive to the finishing area and catch a bus to the starting line. It was COLD while we waited for the race to start, but once we got moving the temperature was absolutely perfect all morning.
I set out with a primary goal to finish the half marathon, and if I could do it in 2:30 or less that would be a nice bonus. The first two miles were perfect, then I started feeling some pain in my right knee. It subsided after about a mile, and I ran the first 7 miles in 71 minutes, way better than I ever expected. I saw my parents at 6.5 miles and told them I might be able to finish in 2:10-2:15!
Mile 8 is when I entered the depths of knee pain hell, and my pace for that mile dropped to 11:25 with a significant amount of walking. I ran the last 6.1 miles in approximately 68 minutes, in pain the entire time, and finished with an official chip time of 2:18:46. I was very surprised and very happy!
My pains today: right knee, right hip (new), left calf (new), and a huge blood blister on the tip of the toe next to my right big toe (no pain, but something new).
My sister, Cristen, whose goal was 2:15, finished in 2:08, and my brother-in-law, Jon, whose goal for the full marathon was 4:30-5:00, finished in 4:17! They got me into running last June, and I'm extremely proud of them.
Now I just need to figure out how to get up and down the steps. My wife suggested laying a blanket down and just sliding, which works great, but now I am stuck downstairs...
Speaking of my wife, a HUGE THANKS goes out to her for being so patient with me and all the time I have spent training. She made it pretty painless, and I really appreciate that.

Good Race.
I am chuckling a little about your magic carpet ride down the stairs. I'm a rehab nurse - maybe I could offer a pearl of wisdom or two on getting back up those stairs?
Hey Collin, congrat's on your half-mary! Thanks for stopping by my blog.
I got the profiles for the Duceman off the race website, that's where you can get them often times. For workouts I will use my Garmin Forerunner and then do a screen capture to get the elevation profile. It is also possible to use a site like Map My Run http://www.mapmyrun.com/ to trace out your route and then you can get an elevation profile. This can be especially useful if you are going to do a race somewhere you have not been and the race website does not have a profile, however, they have to provide you with turn-by-turn directions of the course.
