Ugh. Will somebody please shoot me?

I just finished running 10 miles on the treadmill at the YMCA. I'm pretty sure I'm supposed to be feeling some sense of accomplishment, as this was my longest training run EVER, and I did it on a damn treadmill, but I'm really not feeling great about it. I kind of "hit the wall" after 7 miles, and the last 3 miles may have been the most difficult thing I've ever done both physically and mentally. My heart rate shot through the roof, I was exhausted, and I had to talk myself out of quitting at least 5 times. I did it, though. I ran 10 miles on a treadmill. Sure, it took me an hour and 59 minutes (please don't laugh), but I didn't stop until I hit 10.00 miles.

I'm really starting to wonder what I've gotten myself into, and whether I'll really ever be able to run 26.2 miles in under 5 hours. I know one thing for sure, I used to look forward to every run, but I'm finding it pretty difficult to get excited about doing another 17 miles on the treadmill next week, and then more every week after that.

Somebody shoot me. Please.

Wow - that does sound pretty dreadful...way to go in toughing it out. Hope you get nicer weather soon! I enjoy short & really hard workouts on my treadmill. Otherwise, ICK!

Ever tried the walk/run? It can help to make the miles go by a little easier. Used it to train for my third marathon, after the conventional way the first two.

Not sure if it made me faster, but it definitely helped me get in the longer mileage, which I had a very hard time doing before that.

Oh, by the way, the walk/run format for most of that training was alternating 4 minutes running, 1 minute walking.

You know your post hits close to home with me. I've finished 3 Marathons and an IronMan in the last 3 years. Each time I train for a Marathon -- you would think it would get easier, but instead I have the same thoughts as you did. What the heck am I doing? How can I run 26 miles when I can hardly do 14 miles, on and on,... I did 16 on the treadmill on Thursday and felt terrible. The only thing I can tell you is that my long runs don't get easier, but the Marathons do get easier and I always make it.

Keep the faith and best of luck...
